The 22q11 deletion syndrome is also known as velo-cardio-facial syndrome. This is characterised by a cleft palate, heart problems and facial abnormalities, narrow eyelid openings and a small mouth. Research has revealed that 30% of these individuals develop a psychotic disorder, mainly schizophrenia (Karayiorgou et al., 1995; Murphy et al., 1999).
