In Austria since 1975 the additive specialisation in Neuropsychiatry of children and adolescents was available for psychiatrists, paediatricians and neurologists. The Austrian Society for Child and Youth Psychiatry was then founded in 1985. Since 2007 Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is recognised as a clinical discipline of its own independent from general psychiatry and paediatrics. In 2016 it changed its name into Österreichische Gesellschaft für Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie, Psychosomatik und Psychotherapie (ÖGKJP), or Austrian Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics, and Psychotherapy (ASCAP).
The main activities of the society are to support the development of child and adolescent psychiatry and to enhance the mental health services for children through counselling of health authorities, information and public relations.
To support young colleagues in child and adolescent psychiatry training the Austrian society is organising annual congresses and courses at national and regional level in different clinical areas for trainees.

The aim of the society is to
- Support the development of child and adolescent psychiatry as a clinical discipline
- To take part in preventive child mental health programmes
- To provide support to trainees in CAP-Training
- To increase research activities in child and adolescent psychiatry
- Strengthen the lobby for children and the network with allied professions

The society cooperates with health authorities, medical and legal organizations and professionals to strengthen the mental health of children and the rights of children within the society.
