PROFILE

The Spanish association of child and adolescent psychiatry (AEPNYA) is a professional medical organization comprised of psychiatrists trained to promote healthy development and to evaluate, diagnose, and treat children and adolescents and their families who are affected by mental disorders. The society was founded in 1952 in Barcelona and it now has about four hundred members (85 percent of the Spanish psychiatrists treating children and adolescents).
The Spanish Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry's role is to lead its membership through collective actions, continuing education, and mobilization of resources. This society supports the highest ethical and professional standards of clinical practice, advocates for the mental health and public health needs of children, adolescents and their families, promotes research and continued expansion of the scientific base of child and adolescent psychiatry and collaborates with other health care providers who share common goals.
The Spanish Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry does not support any specific scientific orientation and it is open to scientific discussion of children's mental health and its clinical practice. One of its key objectives is the recognition of the area as a medical speciality in Spain, as it is in almost all of the European countries.
