Pieter Hoekstra holds the Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. He is also the current director of the Accare Child Study Center that focus its scientific efforts on the treatment and etiology of child-onset mental disorders. Pieter is also practising child and adolescent  at the tic disorders and ADHD outpatient clinic of Accare in Groningen. 

He studies the effectiveness of treatments for ADHD and comorbid disorders, both pharmacological treatments and psychosocial treatments. Other research efforts are directed at the etiology and causes of Tourette’s disorder and ADHD, using neuroimaging, neurocognition and epidemiological approaches (into the role of genetics and gene* environment interactions). It is Pieter’s ultimate to improve the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of psychiatric disorders.​ He has published over 335 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters and is one of the experts on ADHD and Tourette according to Expertscape.
